Behind the Scenes: Our Journey Sourcing Ethical Coconut Products from Vietnam

When customers in the US and Europe hold in their hands a bowl made from coconut shell, a piece of furniture made from coconut wood, or any by-product from the coconut tree, they often only see the natural beauty and sophistication. But behind each of these products is a journey of more than two years, dozens of field trips, and hundreds of meetings with Vietnamese farmers – those who have transformed the country's "green gold" into a sustainable and ethical supply source.
We began this journey with a very simple question: How can we bring Vietnamese coconut products to the international market without compromising the environment and the rights of the farmers?

                 1.From idea to reality
In 2023, we decided to bypass large intermediaries and instead go directly to the source regions. Our first destination was Ben Tre – Vietnam's coconut capital, where over 70% of the agricultural land is planted with coconuts. We didn't go as "wholesale buyers," but brought cameras, notebooks, and a commitment: to only cooperate with cooperatives and farmers who fully met the three "3E" criteria: Ethical, Environmental, and Economic.
We wandered through coconut groves along the Mekong River, where coconut trees were traditionally grown intercropped with other fruit trees. Not all groves met the standards. In some places, we saw signs of excessive use of chemical fertilizers, and in others, laborers were not being paid fairly. We immediately eliminated those sources.

2.How is the criterion of "ethical" defined?
                  • For us, "ethics" is not just a slogan. Every partner must:
+ Fair wages and social insurance for harvesters (primarily women and the elderly).
+ No child labor in any form.
+ Commitment to not burning coconut husk waste but transforming it into valuable by-products (coconut fiber, activated charcoal, coconut flour, etc.).
+ Application of organic farming practices or moving towards organic farming within 3 years.
+ Allow us to conduct unannounced inspections and publicly disclose the supply chain (traceability) via QR code on the product.
✨ After eight months of screening, we selected only three cooperatives and twelve individual farmers in Ben Tre and Tien Giang provinces. The numbers are small, but the quality is high.

                 3.Stories from the farmers
                  • Uncle Hai Em – a 62-year-old farmer in Tan Thanh commune, Ben Tre province – is someone we will always remember. He recounted: “Before, when I sold coconuts to traders, the price fluctuated, sometimes going a whole month without anyone buying. Now, cooperating with you, the price is clearly listed, we buy year-round, and even the leftover coconut shells and wood are bought. I can plant with peace of mind without worrying about inventory.”

                  • Ms. Lan, the owner of a small processing factory, shared: “We no longer have to burn coconut shells. Now we grind them into fibers and press them into activated charcoal for export. Workers' income has increased by 40% compared to before.”
✨ Such stories made us even more convinced that we were doing the right thing.

4.The process from coconut plantation to customer
                 • Each shipment undergoes five rigorous quality control steps:
+ Harvested manually when mature coconuts fall naturally.
+ The husk, wood, and fiber are separated right in the plantation to minimize wasteful transportation.
+ Naturally dried using solar energy (no charcoal).
+ Pesticide residue and heavy metal testing is conducted at an independent laboratory.
+ Packaged and labeled with a QR code for traceability.

5.Why are American and European customers concerned about "ethics"?
According to recent reports from Nielsen and Statista, over 78% of American and European consumers are willing to pay more for products with sustainable certifications and transparent origins. They're not just buying a coconut bowl or coconut wood product – they're buying the confidence that the product doesn't harm the environment and doesn't exploit workers.
We are proud to say that each of our coconut products carries the story of Vietnamese farmers – honest, hardworking people who deserve the respect they deserve.

🌴🌴The journey is not over yet🌴🌴
