How Vietnamese Artisans Make Handmade Pottery – Behind The Scenes At A Traditional Village

Have you ever wondered why a ceramic vase, a teacup, or a decorative plate can evoke such warmth, vibrancy, and personality? It's not just a product – it embodies the soul of over 800 years of Vietnamese ceramic tradition, crafted by skilled artisans with their dexterous hands and passionate hearts.
Today, we invite you on a journey back in time to an ancient craft village along the Red River – where the sound of kiln wheels still echoes every morning, and the scent of fresh clay blends with the smoke from the kilns. This is the real-life behind-the-scenes experience of the handcrafted pottery you own or will soon own when you purchase from us.

1.Step 1:  Select and knead the clay.
                   • It all begins with pure clay, hand-extracted from riverbeds. Not industrial clay, but a natural type of clay with the highest plasticity and fire resistance. Artisans use their hands and feet to knead the clay for hours, removing impurities and creating a smooth, velvety mass. This process requires a lifetime of experience: even a small mistake can cause the product to crack during firing.

2.Step 2: Shaping – Creating the form with hands and a wheel
                   • No modern machinery, just a traditional wooden potter's wheel and skilled hands. From a lifeless lump of clay, the artisans gently caress, stretches, and shapes each soft curve. Every teapot, every vase is molded entirely by hand. No two products are exactly alike – that is the unique hallmark of Vietnamese pottery.

3.Step 3:  Carving and enamel painting
                   • This is a moment of true artistic explosion. Artisans use bamboo knives and sticks to carve intricate patterns: dragons and phoenixes, lotus flowers, bamboo and plum blossoms, or modern abstract motifs specifically for the American and European markets. This is followed by a layer of natural glaze, prepared according to a time-honored family recipe. Jade glaze, antique blue glaze, earthy brown glaze… each color is a combination of plant ash, feldspar, and generations of experience.

4.Step 4: The Spirit of Fire – Firing in a Traditional Wood-fired Kiln
                   • The product is placed in a wood-fired kiln tens of meters long, maintaining a temperature of 1200–1300°C for 48–72 hours. The fire is not controlled by machines, but is manually tended by the artisans 24/7. Smoke rises, ash falls, and the miraculous transformation of the fire creates the random glaze cracks – the characteristic “face” unique to handcrafted pottery.

                  5.Step 5: Finalization & Rigorous Testing
                   • After cooling, each item is cleaned, sound-tested (a light tap should produce a clear, resonant sound), and water-tightened. Only products that meet 100% of the standards are hand-packaged and shipped to you in the US and Europe.
                   • Each piece of pottery you hold in your hands is not just a decorative item – it tells the story of an artisan who has dedicated their life to preserving a traditional craft. It embodies the spirit of Vietnamese craft villages, the patience, the love, and the enduring value that mass production cannot provide.
