The 600-Year-Old Story of Dong Xam Silver Village: Vietnam’s Hidden Gem for Handcrafted Sterling Silver Jewelry

Imagine wearing a silver necklace under the lights of Paris or New York. Each engraved line is more than just a design – it embodies over 600 years of history, the skillful hands of Vietnamese artisans who have passed down their craft through generations.
This is the story of Dong Xam Silver Village (Hong Thai commune, Kien Xuong district, Thai Binh province) – a hidden gem of Vietnamese traditional crafts that few people know about

Since 1428, during the early Le Dynasty, artisan Nguyen Kim Lau from Bao Lac district (now Cao Bang province) brought the essence of goldsmithing to his village, built a workshop, and taught the craft to the villagers. Over 600 years have passed, and the Dong Xam silversmithing craft has not only survived through historical ups and downs but has also become one of the three most famous silversmithing villages in Vietnam, alongside Hang Bac in Hanoi and Dinh Cong. The temple dedicated to the founder of the craft still stands majestically by the Vong River, where artisans today still maintain their family secrets: using pure 925 or 9999 silver, completely unadulterated, forged, plated, and engraved entirely by hand using the simplest tools.

Each piece of jewelry from Dong Xam is a unique masterpiece.
The intricate patterns of dragons and phoenixes, golden lotuses, Central Highlands flowers and foliage, or Vietnamese folk motifs are hand-carved by artisans – each hammer stroke, each chisel stroke carries the soul of the craftsman. No two pieces of jewelry are exactly alike, as each product is the unique creation of the artisan. That is why customers in the US and Europe – connoisseurs of handmade and heritage jewelry – are increasingly seeking Dong Xam silver to own a piece of jewelry that is not only beautiful but also carries a profound cultural story.

While mass-produced jewelry often looks dull and easily goes out of style, handcrafted Dong Xam silver becomes more beautiful with use. Pure silver, over time, will develop a natural patina – the mark of a truly living and soulful piece. It's a gift you can pass down to your children and grandchildren, a reminder of an ancient yet vibrant Vietnam.
Today, the artisans of Dong Xam village are still working late into the night and waking up early, their hands calloused from decades of hammering, to bring you the purest silver bracelets, earrings, bangles, necklaces, and rings.
